Chapter 3AII: Search the Building for Threats or Alternative Exits
The door shuts behind you with a muffled clang, the rusted hinges groaning in protest. Inside, the oppressive darkness seems to swallow you whole, the faint glow of the terminal the only source of light in the vast, empty space. Your pulse quickens as the air grows still. The faint, mechanical hum reverberates through the walls, distant but unmistakable. You're not alone.
The terminal, sitting across the room like a silent sentinel, seems to beckon you forward. But you hesitate. Something about the silence, the strange hum, doesn't sit right with you. The words K.O. sent you still echo in your mind, “You made it. Now we begin.” The message feels more like a warning than an invitation. You're walking into something, but you don't yet know what.
Taking a deep breath, you force yourself to focus. The terminal could provide you with answers—vital information about the Nexus AI and its breach. But right now, you don't trust the situation. Not the building, not the message, and certainly not the way it all feels too convenient. It could be a trap. And you can't afford to rush in blindly.
You glance around, scanning the dimly lit room. The air smells of decay—damp concrete, rusted metal, and something faintly chemical. A large industrial warehouse, judging by the layout, filled with stacks of unused tech, broken bots, and old scrap parts. Shelves line the walls, cluttered with discarded pieces of outdated equipment. Old computers, half-dismantled drones, and tangled wiring fill the room. But despite the mess, there's a clean, almost deliberate path to the terminal. As though someone, or something, has been expecting you.
Your rig buzzes again, a low vibration against your side. You check the display: Trace breach in progress. It's still coming, and it's moving faster now, like a predator closing in. If the hackers behind it are skilled, it won't be long before they find your position. Every second you delay feels like an eternity, but rushing in without caution could be deadly.
Focus, Alex, you remind yourself. The terminal isn't going anywhere, and neither are the dangers lurking in the shadows. The first rule is to stay alive.
You move cautiously, stepping lightly over the scattered debris, your boots making soft thuds on the damp concrete floor. Your breath is shallow as you navigate around an overturned tech crate, its contents spilling out like the remains of some forgotten experiment. A faint scraping noise from deeper in the building makes you freeze, every muscle tensing.
What was that?
The sound came from farther down the hallway leading to the back of the building, an area you hadn't yet explored. It was subtle—metal on metal, almost too soft to hear over the distant hum of the machinery—but it was unmistakable. Someone, or something, is moving in the dark.
You press yourself against the wall, blending into the shadows, straining your ears to catch any sound. The scrape comes again, this time louder, followed by a soft mechanical whir. You swallow hard, the hairs on the back of your neck standing on end. It's a drone. Probably one of Aperture Dynamics' patrol models. Their sleek humanoid designs are known for being eerily quiet when they want to be, and they're programmed to detect intruders with terrifying precision.
You glance over your shoulder at the terminal, its soft glow still flickering in the distance. As much as you want to move toward it, the threat of the drone moving closer forces your hand. The last thing you need is to be caught in the open, with no cover and no escape. Your options are limited, but they exist.
Move, now.
You dart down a nearby corridor, heart pounding in your chest, silently cursing the echo of your footsteps. The hallway is narrower here, lined with old pipes and rusted beams that add to the building's neglected atmosphere. You slip behind a metal pillar and crouch, trying to make yourself as small as possible. The scraping sound continues, closer now, followed by the unmistakable click-click of servos. The drone is moving along the hallway, scanning for signs of movement. It's methodical, efficient—but not as fast as you'd like.
You press yourself harder into the corner, your breath coming in quiet bursts. The drone passes your hiding spot, its optics scanning the darkness. You hold your breath, praying it won't turn in your direction. It pauses for a moment—just a heartbeat—before moving on, its metallic footsteps fading as it continues down the hall.
Your pulse remains erratic, but you know you've dodged a bullet—this time.
The sound of the drone's footsteps fades into the distance, and you allow yourself a moment to exhale, your body relaxing just slightly. The danger's passed for now, but you know you're not safe yet. The building is full of hidden threats, and you can't afford to get complacent.
You continue down the hallway, your steps more deliberate now, your mind racing through your options. Ahead of you, you see the glint of a metal door. It's slightly ajar, and through the gap, you can make out a sliver of light from outside. A potential exit.
But it's too soon to rush out. You need more information, more answers. The terminal is still your primary objective, and it's too risky to leave it unchecked.
You reach the door and push it open a little wider. The alley beyond is empty, the streetlights flickering in the rain-soaked darkness. You glance back toward the terminal. The building, despite its decaying state, holds more secrets—secrets that might just help you understand K.O.'s message, and the Nexus AI's sudden breach. But the clock is ticking. The trace will find you soon.
You weigh your options. The exit is right there, an easy escape from whatever's in the building with you. You could slip out into the night, disappear into the rain-drenched streets, and find another way to gather intel. But that would mean giving up on the terminal's answers. Answers you may never get again if you leave now.
Stay or go?
You take one last look at the terminal in the distance, its blinking lights now casting a foreboding glow over the room. The faint whine of servos hums in the background, making your skin crawl. You know you need to make your decision quickly.
With a final, reluctant glance at the exit, you make your way back toward the terminal. The shadows stretch long in the corners, and the air grows thicker with each step you take. The quiet hum of the machines grows louder, more insistent. You pause, listening for any more signs of movement. The drone has retreated for now, but there's no telling what else lurks in the depths of the building.
The terminal sits at the far end of the room, glowing like a beacon in the darkness. Your rig pings again, the message from K.O. still flashing on your HUD. “Now we begin.” The phrase hangs in the air, and you know there's no turning back. The answers lie ahead.
But so do the risks.
